Kenya takes its name from the Kamba word for Mt. Kenya, Kinyaa, which means ostrich and refers to the mountain’s black and white snow-capped peaks – which are similar in colour to a male ostrich. The early British colonists took the Kamba word, Kinyaa, and that’s how Kenya got it’s name. Kenya has been described as the ‘cradle of humanity’ and has become synonymous with the word ‘Safari’. It has a vast ethnic diversity and cultural vibrancy. This journey will take you in to the heartlands of the world-famous Maasai Mara, which is a northern extension of the Serengeti, and is named after the scarlet-cloaked, Maasai people – the great cattlemen of Africa. With its lush open plains, awe-inspiring mountain ranges, impossibly beautiful weather, Kenya and the Mara will certainly inspire your mind and stir your soul.
On this incredible expedition you will join Alex Roldan, Co-founder of Earth Art Creative Expeditions. Our journey will take us through some of the most breathtaking scenery in Kenya and give you the opportunity to get close to, photograph and experience the myriad of spectacular wildlife which call this region home.
Nature looms large in Kenya and our iconic journey will take us in to the Maasai Mara’s Northern Conservancy.
Your adventure will begin in Nairobi, where we will meet and spend two nights and pay a visit to the David Sheldrake Wildlife Trust and Sanctuary where you will have opportunity to interact with orphaned African elephants and Rothschild giraffe. Learning all about these iconic and endangered species, close up. The ‘DSWT’ is one of the most successful rescue and rehabilitation for orphaned and injured African elephants in the world.
From Nairobi, we will travel north by road to the Maasai Mara’s Northern Conservancy (MNC). Which is still part of the Maasai Mara National Park but is reserved for those staying within the expanse of the MNC’s private areas – which itself is over 34,000 hectares in size. This vast and exclusive wilderness is home to phenomenal wildlife and because of its privacy, we won’t be crowded in sightings and the wildlife will be treated with the upmost respect.
The traditional, yet sumptuous Safari camp you will be staying in has been carefully selected to give you an immersive experience of the African wilderness. As well as safari game drives, you will experience bush walks – one of the best ways to experience Africa, and cultural experiences with the local Maasai tribes.
This outstanding journey has been designed to give you an exceptional wildlife experience – giving you the opportunity to witness and photograph a diverse range of African species. Leaving you with an abundance of amazing memories and images to take home and inspire you.
Once you have booked and your place is confirmed; Alex will be in touch to talk through this amazing trip and also send you a suggested packing list, answering any and all questions you may have

An avid ethologist, with a keen passion for conservation and the natural world – that’s how I would describe myself.
I have been fortunate to have trained, qualified and subsequently worked as a professional Field Guide and Ranger in various game reserves around South Africa – including the world renowned Sabi Sands.
Intrigued by textures, light, shapes and colours; I strive to let each of my images tell a story – encapsulating the character of the subject – this is the ethos behind my photography endeavour to stay true to this vision as closely as possible with each image I capture.
One of my main goals with my work as a wildlife and nature photographer has never been for personal recognition but to highlight the plight of what remains of the natural world around us. Using my passion and understanding, I aim to show more than just a fleeting moment captured but also tell a story, bringing the image alive and giving it greater depth.

Day One – Arriving in Nairobi, Kenya – we will meet you at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and spend the evening relaxing at the Tamarind Tree Hotel, which will be our bed and breakfast accommodation for the next two nights. During dinner, Alex will go through the planned itinerary logistics with you, answering any questions you may have, and also sharing some ideas and inspirations for your photography during the coming adventure.
Day Two – After breakfast, we will be meet our local guide who will take us to the David Sheldrake Wildlife Trust Sanctuary, which today has the most successful orphaned elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. You will have the opportunity to interact with and feed some of the orphaned elephants. We will also visit a giraffe sanctuary which is home to critically endangered Rothschild giraffes. Both these experiences will give you an excellent chance to learn about two of Africa’s iconic species close up. Depending on the time these activities finish, we may have time to pay a visit to one of Nairobi’s world class hopping malls to pick up any last minute items you may need before we head to the Maasai Mara the following day.
Day Three – We start our day with a morning wake-up call and enjoy breakfast. Shortly after, we will meet our driver who will take up north through Kenya towards the world-famous Maasai Mara. The journey will take around four hours and will take us though some breath taking scenery as we pass through local communities and villages. We should arrive in the Mara North Conservancy and the Off Beat Mara Safari Camp with time to relax and settle in to our home for the next five nights before heading out on our first exploratory safari as we go in search of the myriad of spectacular wildlife which call this vast area of natural beauty, home. There is an abundance of wildlife in the reserve with iconic species such as lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, hyena, elephant, rhino, buffalo, zebra, giraffe… the list is endless.
Please remember that sightings of these species is not guaranteed but our local guides and trackers will work tirelessly to give us the best possible sightings. You will not only have the opportunity to witness these species in their natural environment but also learn how each and every species plays an integral role in the ecosystem as a whole.
The Off Beat Mara Safari Camp is situated in the heart of the Mara Northern Conservancy, which in itself is over 34,000 hectares in size. And will provide us luxury and privacy in exquisitely decorated, traditional safari tents – we will enjoy full-board accommodation, including alcoholic beverages, apart from champagne, which can be purchased at your own personal costs.
Day Four/Five/Six/Seven – Each day, we will be woken with an early morning call and usually either before or as dawn is breaking, head out on our morning safari. The reason for such an early start is to give us greater opportunity to spot predator activity in the cooler periods of the morning which precedes the hotter times of the day.
After our morning game drives, we will enjoy breakfast back at camp or even a ‘bush breakfast’ – which will be laid out for us overlooking the stunning vistas of the Maasai Mara. A planned itinerary will be worked out for the coming days and will include activities such as guided bush walks, which will enable you to appreciate the African wilderness on foot. This is not an overly strenuous activity but it will give you a greater appreciation of the natural world and also the opportunity to see and experience things which might be missed whilst in a vehicle. Other activities such as a full day exploring the Maasai Mara National Reserve, visits to local Maasai villages, markets and schools will also be incorporated in to the coming days – All of which will give you a greater appreciation of the history and culture of the noble Maasai people, which are known as the Great Cattlemen of Africa.
Afternoon and evening Safari game drives will take place as the heat of the day begins to subside. And depending on sightings, we will find a place to stop and enjoy Sundowners… the African tradition of watching a mesmerising sunset in the company of friends and enjoying a refreshing drink before heading back to camp and enjoying dinner together, or in the privacy of your own tent should you wish.
The days’ activities will be arranged accordingly but there should be ample time for you to relax and unwind, recharge your camera batteries, look through images you have already taken and work with Alex on post-processing and talking through Lightroom techniques.
Day Eight – Depending on group logistics, we may have opportunity for one final early morning game drive before breakfast and departing from Off Beat Mara Safari Camp and driving back to Nairobi where our current adventure will come to an end.
Once you have booked and confirmed your place, Alex will be in touch to discuss the details with you. He will also send and talk through a suggested packing list to assist you in preparing for this simply incredible journey which will more than certainly inspire you with the world around you.
The Tamarind Tree Hotel, Nairobi – Kenya
Two nights Bed & Breakfast accommodation
This hotel is located in the south west area of Nairobi and has easy access to all parts of the city, with world class shopping malls and restaurants nearby.
It boasts outstanding leisure amenities and exceptional service. With elegant yet informal bar areas, coffee shop, main dining room and also the world famous Carnivore restaurant where you can taste a plethora of exotic meats.
Off Beat Mara Safari Camp – Maasai Mara Northern Conservancy, Kenya
Five nights fully inclusive accommodation, including drinks/alcoholic beverages (excluding champagne).
This small, traditional safari camp is situated in the 34,000 hectare Mara North Conservancy (MNC). The area is full of wildlife and enjoys spectacular viewing all year round and yet is far enough away from other cams and lodges. The MNC is only open to member camps and has a strict policy on game viewing etiquette. For these reasons, guests enjoy a wholly exclusive safari experience which is becoming more and more difficult to find.
Off Beat Mara maintains a private ambience by consisting of only seven tents. The heart of the camp is the ‘mess tent’ which has a sitting room, dining room and a library/bar.
All accommodation tents are en-suite with flush loos, and tradtitional hot showers. Each tent has it’s own veranda and is carefully positioned to offer wonderful views as well as privacy.
Because the camp is situated in the private MNC, this allows us opportunity to do activities which are prohibited in the main, national reserve areas, such as night drives – to go in search of predators and nocturnal species as well as experiencing Africa on foot by going on escorted bush walks with Maasai guards and guides.
